Here’s a new publication for Protestant Christians who appreciate and utilize confessions: Creeds, Confessions, & Catechisms: A Reader’s Edition. It’s a hardcover that contains thirteen creeds, Reformed catechisms, and Protestant confessions. Specifically, it has the Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian creeds. It also has the Chalcedonian Definition. As for confessions, it has the Augsburg (Lutheran), Belgic and Westminster (Reformed) and the London Baptist. It also has these Reformed catechisms: Westminster Larger and Shorter and the Heidelberg. Each of these creeds, catechisms, and confessions has a brief one or two page introduction. There is also a topical and Scripture index in the back of the book.
To be honest, I’m not sure why this is a “Reader’s Edition.” The cynic in me says this lingo is sort of a marketing strategy. Are there Christian books published that aren’t meant for reading, that are not “reader’s editions?” There is a ribbon book mark in this book so maybe that’s what makes this one a reader’s edition. Not sure. It’s basically a handsome hardcover book that has the above-mentioned creeds, catechisms, and confessions.
I suppose one has to limit a book like this, but I would’ve liked to see Luther’s Catechisms in it and perhaps the Helvetic Confessions. Anyway, I can’t fault the publisher for not including all these because then it would have to be multi-volume!
All in all, this is a helpful and good resource if you want a handful of creeds, Protestant confessions, and Reformed Catechisms in one hardcover copy. There are other similar books out there, but none that have just these resources in one copy. Here’s the info: Creeds, Confessions, & Catechisms (Wheaton: Crossway, 2022).
