Peter Enns has just posted the .pdf’s of a dialogue between himself and Bruce Waltke in the Spring 2009 issue of the Westminster Theological Journal. This has been the most enjoyable exchange I’ve read to date regarding Inspiration and Incarnation. It will no doubt lead to more thoughtful and intelligent comments than we’ve usually seen from both supporters and opponents of Enns’ writing. Would that the professionalism and candor of the discussion be a model for us all as new approaches to interpreting scripture are explored, debated and discussed!

Yea, great dialogue indeed. I like Waltke’s humble disagreement with Enns’ interpretation of certain texts: “Although the truth represented in Scripture is absolute and certain, our interpretations of it are not always such; we all still see through a glass darkly. And so I remain open to further discussion in our common quest for maturity in the faith” (p 94). Also, at the end of Waltke’s review, I appreciated the Christian love shown quite clearly. Instead of calling Enns some pretty bad names (like we’ve seen others do!), Waltke notes firm differences do not separate them in the common faith.
Enns too began and ended with charity; and in the middle he well explained his position without smashing Waltke all around.
You’re right – a good discussion model!
